Target Information

Leptospira is a genus of pathogenic, highly motile, spiral-shaped spirochete bacteria responsible for leptospirosis, a widespread zoonotic disease affecting humans, canines, and livestock. Transmitted through water or soil contaminated with infected urine, these bacteria target renal tubules and hepatic tissues. Critical targets for diagnostic assays, serotyping, and vaccine development include major outer membrane proteins such as LipL32 (the most abundant surface lipoprotein), LipL41, and OmpL1, alongside variable lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigens that determine serovar specificity.
