Target Information

Hemagglutinin is the major surface glycoprotein and primary virulence factor of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus. It mediates viral entry by specifically binding to alpha 2,3-linked sialic acid receptors, primarily found in the avian gastrointestinal tract and the human lower respiratory tract. Following endocytosis, the HA2 subunit undergoes a low-pH-triggered conformational change to facilitate membrane fusion. Due to its role in host range adaptation and high mortality rates, H5 HA is a critical target for pandemic preparedness, neutralizing antibody therapy, and vaccine design.
