Target Information
M2e is the highly conserved 23-amino acid N-terminal extracellular domain of the M2 ion channel in Influenza A (H3N2). While the viral surface glycoproteins HA and NA undergo frequent antigenic drift, the M2e sequence remains remarkably stable across seasonal H3N2 strains. In the H3N2 subtype, M2e serves as a critical target for "universal" vaccine strategies. Antibodies directed against H3N2 M2e facilitate the clearance of infected host cells through Fc-mediated effector functions, such as antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and phagocytosis, providing broad heterosubtypic protection.
