Target Information
H17 is a phylogenetically distinct hemagglutinin identified in little yellow-shouldered bats.2 Unlike canonical HAs, the H17 protein possesses a highly acidic and distorted putative receptor-binding site (RBS) that does not bind traditional 3alpha 2,3- or 4 alpha 2,6-linked sialic acids.5 Emerging research suggests H17 may utilize MHC class II molecules as entry receptors instead of glycans.6 Despite these functional differences, it retains the typical trimeric Class I fusion protein structure, mediating viral internalisation and endosomal membrane fusion, making it a critical focus for bat-borne virus surveillance and cross-species transmission studies.
