Target Information
Guinea pig Interleukin-4 (IL-4) is a pleiotropic cytokine primarily produced by T-helper type 2 (Th2) cells. It plays a crucial role in promoting humoral immune responses, as well as allergic reactions and asthma. IL-4 is involved in B cell activation, enhancing the expression of class II MHC molecules on resting B cells and promoting the secretion and cell surface expression of IgE and IgG1. It also regulates the expression of the low-affinity Fc receptor for IgE (CD23) on lymphocytes and monocytes. In the context of immune responses, IL-4 drives the differentiation of naive helper T cells (Th0) into Th2 cells, which then produce more IL-4 in a positive feedback loop. This cytokine is essential for understanding the Th2-mediated immune response and has potential applications in studying allergic diseases and asthma in guinea pig models.
