Goat defensin beta 2 (goat β-defensin-2, GBD-2) is an antimicrobial peptide that plays a crucial role in the innate immune response. It is produced by leukocytes and epithelial cells and helps protect against pathogens by directly killing or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms. GBD-2 is expressed in the small intestine and is involved in the defense against infections, particularly those caused by Eimeria spp., a protozoan parasite that causes coccidiosis in goats.
