Target Information
Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus Type A1 is a historical and epidemiologically significant subtype/lineage of the Type A aphthovirus, an un-enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus affecting cloven-hoofed animals. It targets epithelial tissues, causing vesicular lesions. Because Type A viruses exhibit extreme antigenic drift, the hypervariable loops within the VP1 capsid protein-specifically the G-H loop containing the cell-binding RGD motif-are the primary targets for molecular tracking, strain-specific companion diagnostics, and matching tailored vaccine formulations.
