Target Information
Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus Type A is an enveloped-lacking, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA aphthovirus that causes a highly contagious vesicular disease in cloven-hoofed livestock. It targets epithelial cells, inducing painful lesions on the mouth, tongue, and hooves. Due to high antigenic diversity within this serotype, the capsid protein VP1 is the critical target for strain characterization, diagnostics, and vaccine design, as it contains the major neutralizing epitopes and the RGD motif responsible for host cell integrin receptor binding.
