Target Information
Der p 5 is a major respiratory allergen from the European house dust mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus). It is a highly helical protein that typically exists as a monomer but can form dimers or higher-order oligomers. While its exact physiological function in the mite remains under study, it is known to bind hydrophobic ligands and trigger potent IgE-mediated hypersensitivity. High levels of Der p 5-specific IgE are strongly associated with the development of asthma and allergic rhinitis in sensitized populations.
