Target Information
Der p 1 is a 25 kDa cysteine protease and the most clinically significant allergen from the European house dust mite, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. Secreted in high concentrations within fecal pellets, it initiates allergic inflammation by enzymatically cleaving tight junction proteins (like occludin) in the airway epithelium and degrading the low-affinity IgE receptor (CD23). This protease activity enhances mucosal permeability, facilitating the entry of other allergens. It is a primary target for IgE-mediated responses in over 80% of mite-sensitive patients.
