Equine transforming growth factor beta-1 proprotein (TGF-β1) is a multifunctional cytokine that is synthesized by almost all cells and plays a significant role in cell proliferation, growth, differentiation, and cell movement. It is secreted as an inactive peptide, forming part of a latent complex, and upon activation, it binds to cell-surface TGF-β type I and type II receptors, which are transmembrane serine/threonine kinases. TGF-β1 has immunomodulatory effects and profibrogenic effects, playing a driving role in development, fibrosis, and cancer.
