Target Information
Equine latherin (LATH) is a unique, non-glycosylated protein found in horse sweat and saliva, renowned for its strong surfactant properties. It plays a critical role in equine thermoregulation by reducing water surface tension, which facilitates the spread of sweat over the horse's coat for effective evaporative cooling. This is particularly important given horses' thick and waterproofed hair. Additionally, latherin is believed to aid in the processing of dry food material due to its presence in saliva, reflecting the equine adaptation to their dietary habits. The protein's ability to self-assemble at the air-water interface into a dense layer is a key feature of its surfactant activity, which is unusual for a folded globular protein.
