Target Information
TcdA is a high-molecular-weight enterotoxin produced by Clostridioides difficile. It primarily targets the intestinal epithelium, binding to apical carbohydrates to trigger its internalization. Once inside the cytosol, it monoglucosylates Rho-family GTPases, leading to the breakdown of tight junctions, increased vascular permeability, and extensive mucosal inflammation. While similar to TcdB, TcdA is specifically noted for its potent proinflammatory activity and its role in the early stages of fluid secretion and tissue damage during C. difficile infection (CDI).
