Target Information
Chikungunya Virus (CHIKV) is an enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the genus Alphavirus within the Togaviridae family. Transmitted to humans primarily by Aedes mosquitoes (A. aegypti and A. albopictus), it causes chikungunya fever, an acute illness characterized by high fever and severe, often debilitating polyarthralgia. The virus exhibits a strong tropism for fibroblasts, skeletal muscle progenitor cells, and synovial tissues. Key targets for molecular diagnostics, serological assays, and vaccine candidates include the structural envelope glycoproteins, specifically E1 and E2. The E2 protein is responsible for host cell receptor attachment and contains the dominant neutralizing epitopes, while the E1 protein facilitates pH-dependent membrane fusion within the endosome.
