Target Information
Chicken Tyrosinase (TYR) is a critical enzyme involved in melanin synthesis, playing a key role in determining the color of feathers, skin, and other pigmented tissues. It catalyzes the conversion of tyrosine to melanin, influencing the expression of black (eumelanin) and red (pheomelanin) pigments. In chickens, TYR is highly expressed in melanocytes, where it is essential for the functional development of these cells and the rate of melanin production. Mutations in the TYR gene, such as insertions of retroviral sequences, can lead to phenotypes like recessive white plumage.
