Target Information
Macrophage migration inhibitory factor is a pro-inflammatory cytokine. It is involved in the innate immune response to bacterial pathogens. The expression of MIF at sites of inflammation suggests a role as a mediator in the regulation of macrophage function in host defence. It counteracts the anti-inflammatory effects of glucocorticoids. It has phenylpyruvate tautomerase and dopachrome tautomerase activity (in vitro), but the physiological substrate is not known. It is not clear whether the tautomerase activity has any physiological relevance and whether it is important for cytokine activity. Research has shown that both host and parasite MIF molecules bind to chicken macrophages via the CD74 surface receptor.
