Target Information
Chicken GTP-Binding Nuclear Protein Ran (RAN) is a member of the Ras superfamily of small GTPases, playing a crucial role in nucleocytoplasmic transport, mitotic spindle formation, and cell cycle progression. Ran exists in two states, Ran GTP and Ran GDP, and its cycle is regulated by RCC1 (regulator of chromosome condensation 1) and Ran GTPase-activating proteins (RanGAPs). The gradient of Ran GTP and GDP across the nuclear envelope is essential for the directional transport of proteins and RNA between the nucleus and cytoplasm. During mitosis, Ran GTP facilitates the formation and stabilization of microtubules, which are critical for spindle assembly and chromosome segregation. Abnormal expression of Ran has been implicated in various cancers, highlighting its importance in maintaining cellular homeostasis.
