Target Information

Chicken CAR (Caronte) is a secreted glycoprotein and a member of the Cerberus/DAN family of BMP antagonists. It plays a fundamental role in avian embryonic development by establishing left-right asymmetry. Specifically, Caronte is induced by Sonic hedgehog (Shh) in the left paraxial mesoderm, where it binds to and inhibits Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMPs). This antagonism releases the repression on Nodal and Lefty genes, ensuring the proper lateralization of internal organs like the heart and stomach during morphogenesis.
