Target Information

VirB12 is a specialized outer membrane protein encoded by the virB operon of Brucella species, including Brucella abortus. It serves as a component of the Type IV secretion system (T4SS), a critical virulence factor mediating intracellular survival and replication within host macrophages. While not essential for the core translocation machinery assembly, VirB12 is actively expressed during infection and functions as a highly specific serological marker, eliciting strong antibody responses useful for brucellosis immunodiagnostics.
