Protein P80, also known as NS3, is a highly conserved multifunctional non-structural protein essential for Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) replication. It possesses three distinct enzymatic activities: an N-terminal serine protease (responsible for polyprotein processing), a C-terminal RNA helicase, and NTPase activity. P80 is a major immunogen; antibodies against it are frequently used in diagnostic ELISA tests to differentiate infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA). Its high expression is also a hallmark of cytopathic BVDV biotypes.
