Structurally, gp53 is a Type I transmembrane protein that often exists as a heterodimer with E1. Due to its exposure on the virion surface and its role in inducing potent neutralizing antibodies, E2 (gp53) is the critical component for recombinant vaccines, serological diagnostics, and genotype differentiation.
