Erns (gp44/48) is a unique structural glycoprotein of the Pestivirus genus, including BVDV. Unlike typical envelope proteins, Erns lacks a membrane anchor and is both virion-associated and secreted into the extracellular environment. It possesses intrinsic ribonuclease (RNase) activity belonging to the T2 family, which functions as a potent interferon (IFN) antagonist by degrading viral dsRNA to evade host innate immunity. This dual role in viral attachment via glycosaminoglycans and immune subversion makes it a primary target for diagnostic ELISAs and attenuated vaccine development.
