Glycoprotein E2 is the most prominent and immunodominant structural protein on the surface of BVDV-2 virions. It functions as the primary receptor-binding protein, interacting with host CD46 to facilitate viral entry. E2 is the major target for neutralizing antibodies, making it the central component for recombinant subunit vaccines and diagnostic ELISA kits. Due to the high genetic diversity between BVDV-1 and BVDV-2, the E2 protein is also a critical molecular marker for virus genotyping and serological differentiation.
