Target Information
The ESAT-6:CFP-10 Fusion Antigen is a recombinant protein linking two highly immunodominant virulence factors secreted by the ESX-1 system of Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Located within the Region of Difference 1 (RD1) genomic segment, these proteins form a tight 1:1 helical complex essential for macrophage membrane disruption. Because RD1 is absent in all M. bovis BCG vaccine strains and most environmental non-tuberculous mycobacteria, this fusion antigen serves as a critical, highly specific marker in interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) and skin tests to accurately differentiate bovine tuberculosis-infected livestock from vaccinated or environmentally sensitized animals.
