Target Information
Bovine S100 calcium binding protein A8 (S100A8) is a member of the S100 protein family, known for its role as a damage-associated molecular pattern molecule (DAMP) that is released from neutrophils and monocytes in response to inflammation. It forms a heterodimeric protein complex with S100A9, which is critical in the inflammatory response. This complex contributes to the recruitment and activation of immune cells at the site of inflammation and is involved in various immune and inflammatory processes. S100A8 also participates in the antimicrobial defense by competing with pathogens for essential metal ions like zinc and manganese, thereby exhibiting antibacterial properties. Moreover, it has been identified as a biomarker for monitoring disease activity in chronic inflammatory disorders and has potential as a therapeutic target in autoimmune diseases.
