Target Information
Bovine Paratuberculosis, commonly known as Johne's disease, is a chronic, contagious granulomatous enteritis of ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). The pathogen targets the lower small intestine, specifically the ileum, where it replicates intracellularly within macrophages, leading to severe mucosal thickening, malabsorption, progressive emaciation, and chronic diarrhea. Because of its prolonged subclinical phase and intermittent fecal shedding, diagnostic tracking relies heavily on detecting MAP-specific cell-wall antigens (such as lipoarabinomannan) or recombinant proteins (like hsp70) via serum and milk ELISAs.
