Target Information
Bovine hepcidin (Hepc) is a liver-derived peptide hormone that plays a central role in iron homeostasis in cattle. It is a key regulator of iron absorption in the intestine and iron release from macrophages by binding to ferroportin, the only known iron exporter. Hepc is part of the innate immune system and has antimicrobial properties. Its expression is upregulated in response to iron overload, inflammation, and infection, making it a crucial factor in maintaining iron balance and defending against pathogens. Hepcidin's role in iron metabolism and its potential as a therapeutic target in iron-related disorders make it a significant protein in veterinary medicine and livestock health.
