Target Information
Bovine glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) is a type III intermediate filament protein that is specifically expressed in mature astrocytes within the central nervous system of cattle. It plays a pivotal role in providing structural support to the astrocytes and maintaining the stability of the neuronal microenvironment. GFAP is crucial for the formation and maintenance of the blood-brain barrier and is involved in synaptic plasticity and cellular proliferation. The protein is also a marker for astrocyte activation and is often upregulated in response to various CNS injuries or diseases, making it a significant biomarker for neurological conditions. Its expression can be used to study the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, demyelinating disorders, and responses to CNS injury in cattle.
