Target Information
Bovine apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a crucial protein involved in lipid metabolism and transport. It is a major component of lipoproteins and plays a significant role in the distribution and metabolism of cholesterol and other lipids in the body. APOE is also implicated in the maintenance of neuronal function and repair, providing the brain with essential cholesterol. The protein exists in three isoforms-E2, E3, and E4-which exhibit different effects on lipid homeostasis and have distinct impacts on various diseases, including atherosclerosis and neurodegenerative disorders. APOE's function in the immune system and its role in modulating inflammation and oxidative stress are also noteworthy. Therapeutic strategies targeting APOE's beneficial properties are being explored for the treatment of conditions like Alzheimer's disease.
