Target Information
Bovine antithrombin-III (ATIII) is a plasma glycoprotein that is a key inhibitor in the blood coagulation cascade. It is primarily synthesized in the liver and has a normal plasma concentration of approximately 2 μM. ATIII inhibits serine proteases of the intrinsic coagulation pathway such as Factor IXa, Xa, and thrombin, which is its principal physiological target. The inhibition of thrombin by ATIII occurs through the formation of a stable equimolar complex between the inhibitor and protease, which can be enhanced by catalytic amounts of heparin, a polysaccharide. This process is essential for preventing excessive blood clotting and maintaining blood fluidity.
