Target Information

The Spike (S) glycoprotein is a large, type I transmembrane protein that forms the characteristic "corona" of the virus. It is proteolytically cleaved into two subunits: S1, which mediates host cell attachment by binding to sialic acid receptors, and S2, which facilitates viral-cell membrane fusion. As the primary inducer of neutralizing antibodies, the S protein-particularly the hypervariable regions of S1-is the key determinant of viral serotype and the central target for vaccine development against infectious bronchitis.
