Target Information
The p37 protein is a major structural component of the African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) core shell, a matrix-like domain located between the inner envelope and the DNA-containing nucleoid. It is produced through the proteolytic processing of the giant polyprotein pp220 (encoded by the CP2475L gene) by the viral protease S273R. Interestingly, p37 is the first ASFV protein identified as a nucleocytoplasmic shuttling protein; it contains both nuclear localization and nuclear export signals, allowing it to move between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. This shuttling capability suggests that p37 may be involved in transporting viral DNA or regulatory factors to the nucleus to facilitate early replication steps or modulate host gene expression.
