Target Information
Protoporphyrinogen oxidase is responsible for the seventh step in the biosynthesis of protoporphyrin IX. Variegate porphyria is caused by mutations in the PPOX gene, and over 100 mutations linked to this condition have been identified in the PPOX gene. PPOX is a key enzyme in the heme biosynthesis pathway, catalyzing the conversion of protoporphyrinogen to protoporphyrin. In rabbits, this enzyme is encoded by the PPOX gene. As mammals, rabbits may have heme metabolism similar to that of humans or other mammals, and thus PPOX may play an important role in heme synthesis in rabbits.
