Target Information
In rabbits, the MC4R gene encodes the melanocortin 4 receptor. This receptor is prominently expressed in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. The MC4R protein functions as a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) and has the ability to bind α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). The function of MC4R gene in rabbits is mainly in the regulation of body weight and carcass composition. SNPs in its coding sequence were closely related to body weight and feed conversion efficiency of rabbits, suggesting that MC4R may be an important gene affecting the growth performance of rabbits.
