Target Information
Bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP) is the bone-specific isoform of alkaline phosphatase and is a glycoprotein located on the surface of osteoblasts. It reflects the biosynthetic activity of these bone-forming cells and serves as a sensitive and reliable indicator of bone metabolism. Synthesized by osteoblasts, BAP is believed to play a role in the calcification of the bone matrix. The extent of new bone formation can be assessed by assaying bone alkaline phosphatase activity in a rabbit model of cranial defect repair. Bone alkaline phosphatase activity varies across age and sex. For example, bone alkaline phosphatase activity in rabbit bones decreases with age.
