Target Information

Sheep myoglobin (MB) is a cytoplasmic heme-containing globular protein of the globin superfamily. It features a conserved globin fold with eight α-helical segments, a central hydrophobic heme-binding pocket, and histidine residues critical for oxygen coordination and structural stability. It localizes to the sarcoplasm of sheep skeletal and cardiac muscle cells, with tissue-specific expression restricted to striated muscle tissues and negligible levels in non-muscle organs. The protein mediates oxygen storage and intracellular oxygen transport, with conserved motifs for heme ligation and reversible oxygen binding. Sheep MB shares core functional domains with mammalian orthologs, and has distinct species-specific sequence characteristics differentiating it from human and murine MB.
