Rat WFDC5 is a secreted small secretory protein containing conserved four-disulfide WAP structural motifs that maintain stable protein conformation under physiological conditions. It is generated by epithelial cell populations of mucosal and glandular tissues and accumulates within extracellular secretions. Its soluble secreted structural features and epithelium-preferred expression differentiate it from integral membrane receptors, cytoplasmic signal transduction adaptors and intranuclear transcriptional regulators with streamlined single-domain assemblies and static single-compartment subcellular localization profiles.
