Target Information

Rat surfactant protein C (SP-C) is a hydrophobic pulmonary protein of the surfactant-associated protein family. It features a conserved transmembrane α-helical domain, a polyvaline hydrophobic core and N-terminal proteolytic processing sites critical for structural stability. It localizes to alveolar type II cell membranes and pulmonary surfactant lipid bilayers, with tissue-specific expression restricted to rat lung tissue, with negligible levels in other organs. The protein mediates surfactant lipid layer organization, with conserved motifs for hydrophobic interaction. Rat SP-C shares core structural features with mammalian orthologs, and has distinct hydrophobicity differentiating it from SP-A and SP-B.
