Rat PITRM1 is a mitochondria-resident metalloprotease with a conserved zinc-dependent catalytic domain. It maintains stable folded conformation and complete substrate-binding pockets under physiological conditions, localized exclusively within mitochondrial matrix compartments of most cell types. Its organelle-restricted distribution and characteristic metalloprotease core structure differentiate it from membrane-anchored receptors, secreted circulating ligands and intranuclear transcription factors with unrelated domain arrangements and distinct subcellular localization patterns.
