Rat perforin 1 (PRF1) is a critical component of the immune system, particularly in cytotoxic lymphocytes such as natural killer (NK) cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs). It is stored in granules and released upon target cell recognition, forming pores in the target cell membrane. These pores facilitate the entry of granzymes, leading to apoptosis and cell lysis. PRF1 is essential for eliminating infected or transformed cells, maintaining immune homeostasis. Its regulated expression ensures proper immune function.
