Rat Paired-box gene 6 (PAX6) encodes a transcription factor critical for eye, pancreas and central-nervous-system development. Its paired and homeodomains bind DNA to regulate progenitor-cell proliferation, migration and lineage commitment. PAX6 is expressed in retina, lens and forebrain germinal zones, maintaining stem-cell pools while patterning neuronal layers. Haploinsufficiency disrupts ocular and cortical architecture, making the protein a reliable marker of neurogenesis. As a master developmental regulator, PAX6 is an important target for studies of organogenesis, neural differentiation and ocular morphogenesis.
