It shows prominent expression in bone-resorbing cell populations and assembles multiprotein complexes within acidic lysosomal compartments. Its multi-span transmembrane structural framework and osteoclast-enriched distribution differentiate it from soluble secreted cytokines, cytoplasmic signaling adaptors and nuclear transcriptional factors with simplified single-domain assemblies widely distributed across non-skeletal somatic cell subgroups.
