Target Information
Rat ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is a 54-kDa pyridoxal 5'-phosphate-dependent enzyme broadly expressed in rat tissues-with heightened levels in proliferative compartments like the gastrointestinal mucosa, testicular germ cells, and regenerating liver. It mediates the rate-limiting step of polyamine biosynthesis, decarboxylating ornithine to form putrescine, which is further converted to spermidine and spermine. These polyamines are essential for stabilizing nucleic acid structures, regulating ribosome function, and supporting cell cycle progression, underpinning tissue development, wound repair, and adaptive responses to growth signals. Inducible by cytokines, growth factors, and tissue injury, it maintains polyamine balance in physiological and pathological states. As a core mediator of cell proliferation and tissue homeostasis, rat ODC is a critical target for studying regenerative biology, metabolic disorders, and cancer progression.
