Target Information
Rat mucin 1 (MUC1) is a transmembrane glycoprotein encoded by the Muc1 gene in Rattus norvegicus, mapped to chromosome 1. It belongs to the mucin family, featuring a heavily glycosylated extracellular N-terminal domain, a single transmembrane segment and a short intracellular C-terminal tail. It localizes primarily to epithelial cell membranes, with tissue-specific expression in rat airway, gastrointestinal and reproductive tract epithelia, with negligible levels in non-epithelial tissues. The protein mediates cell adhesion modulation and epithelial barrier integrity maintenance, with conserved glycosylation sites critical for structural stability. Rat MUC1 shares core functional motifs with mammalian orthologs, and has distinct glycosylation patterns and domain characteristics differentiating it from other mucin family members.
