Target Information
Rat Lipoprotein Lipase (LPL) is a key enzyme involved in lipid metabolism, primarily expressed in adipose tissue, heart, and skeletal muscle. It functions as a homodimer and catalyzes the hydrolysis of triglycerides in lipoproteins, such as chylomicrons and very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL), into free fatty acids and glycerol, which can be utilized by tissues for energy. LPL also acts as a ligand/bridging factor for receptor-mediated lipoprotein uptake. Deficiencies or mutations in LPL can lead to severe hypertriglyceridemia and are associated with various metabolic disorders, including atherosclerosis and insulin resistance.
