Rat Involucrin is a 68-kDa soluble protein that serves as a major component of the cornified envelope in terminally differentiated keratinocytes. Synthesized in suprabasal layers of stratified epithelia, it is cross-linked by transglutaminases to create a rigid, insoluble barrier essential for skin barrier function. Induced during calcium-mediated differentiation and stress responses, involucrin is a classic marker of epidermal maturation and wound healing.
