Target Information

Rat Glutamate Decarboxylase 2 (GAD2) is the rate-limiting enzyme that converts glutamate to γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the central nervous system. It is predominantly expressed in GABAergic neurons and pancreatic β-cells, where it regulates neurotransmission and insulin secretion, respectively. GAD2 contributes to the maintenance of inhibitory tone in the brain and is a key marker for GABAergic neurons. As a critical regulator of GABA synthesis, it is an important target for studies of neurophysiology and diabetes.
