Rat ENDOG is a mitochondria-resident nuclease with conserved catalytic functional domains that maintain stable protein conformation under physiological conditions. It accumulates within the mitochondrial intermembrane space of cardiac, hepatic and lymphoid cell populations. Its organelle-localized enzymatic structure and broad metabolic tissue expression distinguish it from plasma membrane receptors, extracellular secretory proteins and intranuclear transcriptional regulators with streamlined single-domain assemblies and static single-compartment subcellular localization profiles.
