Target Information

Rat Cytochrome P450 11A1 (CYP11A1) is a mitochondrial enzyme that catalyzes the first and rate-limiting step in steroidogenesis: the conversion of cholesterol to pregnenolone. It is highly expressed in adrenal cortex and gonads, initiating synthesis of glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and sex steroids. CYP11A1 activity controls hormone output and is regulated by ACTH and LH signaling. As the gateway to steroid biosynthesis, CYP11A1 is a key target for studies of endocrine function and adrenal-gonadal physiology.
