Rat chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1, YKL-40) is a 40-kDa secretory glycoprotein widely expressed in rat tissues-with elevated levels in macrophages, epithelial cells, and stromal cells of the lung, liver, and gastrointestinal tract. Despite lacking chitinase enzymatic activity, it acts as a key immunomodulator and tissue remodeling factor: it regulates pro-inflammatory cytokine production, promotes macrophage activation, and enhances cell migration and extracellular matrix remodeling. Inducible by inflammation, tissue injury, or infection, it supports wound healing, tissue repair, and host defense against pathogens. Dysregulated expression is linked to chronic inflammatory disorders and fibrotic processes in rats. As a central mediator of inflammation and tissue homeostasis, rat CHI3L1 is a critical target for studying inflammatory diseases, fibrosis, and immune-related pathologies.
